Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy

Question:

I've seen a few television programs regarding Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP). What are the classic signs and symptoms? What can I do if I think someone may be suffering from this?

Answer:

MSBP is becoming a much talked about parenting disorder. It is a serious form of child abuse in which the abuser, usually the mother, is fabricating symptoms or inducing illness in her infant purposely. The child presents to the Pediatrician or hospital for medical assessment and care, usually persistently often resulting in multiple medical procedures. The abuser denies any knowledge of the etiology. Acute symptoms and signs of illness cease when the child is separated from the abuser.

If you think someone may be abusing a child in this way, you should make a report to Child Protective Services. Alert the child's physician and hospital staff. The safety of the victim must take priority. Do not confront the mother until after plans are in place for the protection and safety of the child.
